What Is a WhatsApp AI Agent?
A WhatsApp AI agent is a program that reads and responds to your WhatsApp messages using a large language model. It appears as a linked device on your account — the same way WhatsApp Web or Desktop works — so it can see incoming messages and send replies on your behalf.
Unlike traditional chatbots that require the WhatsApp Business API and a verified business account, a linked-device agent works with any personal WhatsApp number. You scan a QR code, and it connects. No application process, no API approval, no monthly platform fees.
How WhatsApp Linked Devices Works
WhatsApp supports up to four linked devices per account. Each linked device maintains its own encrypted session with WhatsApp's servers. Messages are end-to-end encrypted between your phone and each linked device independently.
When you link a new device, WhatsApp transfers a set of session keys. The linked device can then send and receive messages without your phone being online. This is what makes an AI agent possible — it operates as one of your linked devices, processing messages in real time.
Important to know: linked device sessions expire after 14 days of inactivity. If your phone does not connect to the internet for two weeks, all linked devices are disconnected. OmniClaw handles reconnection automatically, but your phone needs occasional internet access to keep the session alive.
Prerequisites
You need two things:
- A phone with WhatsApp installed — Any phone running WhatsApp. The phone needs internet access at least once every 14 days to keep linked devices active.
- An email address — Used to create your OmniClaw account. No credit card required. You get $5 free credit to start.
That is it. No server, no Docker installation, no API keys, no coding. The entire setup happens in your browser.
Step-by-Step Setup with OmniClaw
1. Open the Connect Page
Go to omniclaw.run/connect in your browser. This is the onboarding flow that creates your account and provisions your AI agent.
2. Verify Your Email
Enter your email address and click Continue. You will receive a 6-digit verification code. Enter the code to create your account. No password needed — OmniClaw uses email-based authentication.
3. Select WhatsApp
Choose WhatsApp as your messaging channel. OmniClaw will begin provisioning a Firecracker microVM for your agent. This takes about 2 seconds.
4. Scan the QR Code
A QR code appears on screen. On your phone:
- Open WhatsApp
- Go to Settings (or tap the three dots on Android)
- Tap Linked Devices
- Tap Link a Device
- Point your camera at the QR code
Tip: The QR code refreshes every 60 seconds. If it expires, a new one generates automatically. Make sure your phone has a stable internet connection during the scan.
5. Send Your First Message
Once linked, your agent is live. Open any WhatsApp chat and send a message. Your AI agent will respond within a few seconds. Try something simple like "Hello" or ask it a question.
What Your Agent Can Do
Your WhatsApp AI agent is powered by a large language model and can handle a wide range of conversations. Here are some examples:
Personal Assistant
"Summarize this article for me" · "Draft a reply to this email" · "What is the capital of Montenegro?"
Study Partner
"Explain quantum entanglement in simple terms" · "Quiz me on Spanish vocabulary" · "Help me understand this math problem"
Business Helper
"Write a professional follow-up message" · "Translate this to French" · "Suggest a meeting agenda for our product review"
Creative Writing
"Write a birthday message for my colleague" · "Help me brainstorm names for my project" · "Rewrite this paragraph to sound more casual"
Customizing Your Agent
OmniClaw gives you several ways to customize how your agent behaves:
- Skills — Enable built-in skills like web search, image generation, or calendar integration. Skills extend what your agent can do beyond text conversations.
- Model selection — Choose which LLM powers your agent. Switch between models depending on your needs — faster responses or more capable reasoning.
- Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) — If you have your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, or another provider, store it in the encrypted vault and use it directly. No markup on token costs.
Troubleshooting
QR code expired before I could scan it
QR codes refresh automatically every 60 seconds. Wait for the new code to appear and try again. Make sure your phone has a stable connection before opening the camera.
Agent is not responding to messages
Check that your linked device session is still active. Open WhatsApp on your phone, go to Linked Devices, and verify the device appears. If it was disconnected, scan the QR code again from your dashboard.
Session expired after a few days
WhatsApp disconnects linked devices if your phone has not been online for 14 days. Make sure your phone connects to the internet regularly. OmniClaw will attempt to maintain the session, but the phone-side connection is required by WhatsApp.
Responses are slow
Response time depends on the LLM model you are using. Larger models produce better answers but take longer. Try switching to a faster model if speed is more important than depth for your use case.
Privacy and Security
Your WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted between your phone and your linked device. OmniClaw adds additional layers:
- Hardware-isolated VM — Your agent runs in its own Firecracker microVM with a dedicated kernel. No other user's code runs on the same kernel as yours.
- Encrypted credential vault — Your WhatsApp session keys are stored outside the VM in an encrypted vault. They are injected at runtime and never written to disk.
- Auto-destroy — Idle VMs are destroyed automatically. No persistent attack surface for unused instances.
- EU data residency — All infrastructure runs on bare-metal servers in Finland and Germany.
